Aromatherapy for Depression Treatment

From ancient days, different types of aromas have been used to create mood changes. The literature of several ancient civilizations mentions the use of aromas for various purposes. The aromas used in aromatherapy are extracted from plants, fruits and flowers. They have properties to initiate change in the biochemical reactions taking place in the body. A classic example of this is the pleasant feeling that certain colognes and perfumes give.

Aromatherapy can change moods and cure mild forms of depression. Certain type of aromas can also lower stress levels and induce good sleep. Aromatherapy is best used as a complimentary therapy. Aromatherapy bath and aromatherapy massage have a rejuvenating effect.

Persons suffering from depression smelling their favorite flower and fruits can sometimes cure mild forms of depressive illness. Sandalwood, lavender and jasmine have a soothing effect. Rosemary and lemongrass can uplift the mood. Cedarwood, basil, frankincense, rose and orange are also ideal for treating depression. Chamomile, lavender and marjoram are ideal for treating depression arising out of negative emotions.

Certain precaution must be maintained while using aromatic oils. Most of the aromatic oils should not be used directly on the skin. Also make sure that the aromatic oil that is being used does not have any reaction with the medications that is being used. It is better to take the advice of an aromatherapy practitioner or a therapist before trying out any of the different aromatherapy products.
