New Medications for Depression

Researches are on to develop new antidepressant drugs which are more effective and without major side effects. Some of the drugs used as stimulants are now used to treat depressive illness.

Eugeroic drugs, adrafinil and modafinil, are found to highly effective against mood changes. New researches have found that Reboxetine is also highly helpful in treating depression. Tianeptine, a serotonin reuptake accelerator (SSRIs), alleviates common symptoms associated with depression like disturbed sleep and anxiety. Picamilon is another new drug which improves the blood flow to brain and reduces anxiety and stress. Numerous other drugs are also under clinical trial.

It is better to use the new antidepressant drugs after consulting the therapist.

Booster Medications
Usually to find the effect of an antidepressant drug, the therapist has to wait for sometime. This long wait often delays the treatment. If the first drug is found ineffective, another drug has to undergo the same process once again before its effect on the patient can be studied. Sometimes the delay might be longer as the patient's system might need time to alleviate the effect of the first drug.

Now therapists are using an additional drug along with the antidepressant to boost the activity of the antidepressant. Through the booster medications, therapists are able to find the ideal drug for the patient without much delay. Some of the popular booster medications are Cytomel, Lithium and Ritalin.

umerous researches are taking place around the world to find new depression treatments. In the past one hundred years itself, we have come a long way in treating depression. Some new treatments try to reduce or eliminate symptoms while other treatments try to completely root out the problem. Most of the new treatments are more specifically targeted and tries to eliminate the side effects.
