Things to Remember While Taking Antidepressant Drugs

Some patients have the habit of becoming self-appointed doctors. Once they find that the medicine is not working for them they stop it abruptly or consult a different therapist without detailing about the antidepressant drugs that they have been taking .

This might have serious consequences. There is another group of patients who stop the medication as soon as they feel better. The medication should be given enough to time work in the system and should not be stopped without prior approval of the therapist. In order to avoid the recurrence of the state of depression, the full course of antidepressant drug as prescribed by the therapist should be taken. Certain medications can be stopped only gradually. This means that your system cannot abruptly end a particular antidepressant drug and it needs time to adjust.

Mixing one medication with another without the approval of the therapist should not be done at any cost. If you consult a physician, for any other medical condition, you should clearly state the medicines that you are taking for depressive illness. Similarly, it would be wise to inform your psychologist or psychiatrist regarding the new medications that have been prescribed. Also never take over-the-counter drugs without consulting your therapist.

Talk it out with the therapist regarding your food habits. This is because certain food items might trigger other medical conditions and beverages like wine, beer and other types of alcohol can reduce the effectiveness of depression medication.
